38. Sequels Suck, so Does End-of-Term
Tuesday Jan 28, 2020
Tuesday Jan 28, 2020
Richard and Adam are joined by Michael McNeely, a 3L student at Osgoode Hall Law School and returning guest to the show. Unfortunately, sequels never do that well. The group spoils Erin Brockovich. Michael brings up the difficulties law students face in staying faithful to their reasons for coming to law school. Adam remains faithful to finding the job in which he will be least liked. Michael talks about his own case in the legal system.
The gang discusses the worst part of the year, the end of term. Why must it be this way? Adam claims its a chance to compile all things you've learned in the term. He proceeds to compare rabbits and hares. Michael takes issue with 100% exams as representative of lawyering abilities. Is there a chance to learn the law in areas you miss out on in law school? Richard thinks so. The trio brainstorm alternatives to the current law school system of learning.

37. Research Assistant-ships & Innuendos
Sunday Jan 19, 2020
Sunday Jan 19, 2020
Richard and Adam are joined by Jennah Khaled and Patrick McCaugherty second-year students at Osgoode Hall Law School. Jennah and Patrick discuss being an RA (that’s research assistant for those unaware). The newest voicemail is played on air! A law student waxes poetic about the podcast, especially Adam. Richard thinks it’s a set-up.
The Good Wife gets another nod from Jennah while Patrick gives Suits another vote, so those two are running neck-and-neck in our most popular law show category. Suits vs. Good Wife is now an official poll. Adam doesn’t get that a dramatic show doesn’t need to be funny.
Pants were returned to the mall after an exam, although it isn’t clear why or what that has to do with being an RA. Adam, despite being hungover, engages in excellent cross-examination of the guests. Research on roads and railways was one of their summer projects. While some people may say directly that it might be boring, Adam thinks its better to say it’s "not wrong" to say that it's boring.
Everyone discusses the benefits of an Raship. The guests single out the philosopher-king RA and also talk about doing the job while located remotely from the professor with little or no supervision. Richard suggests that the students are treated as near-professional adults.
Jennah explains working at an asylum legal clinic in Tijuana; how law students can get fascinating summer jobs related to the law
Adam calls Richard “Sir”.

36. A Denzel Guy - Advice for 2Ls
Saturday Jan 11, 2020
Saturday Jan 11, 2020
Richard and Adam are joined by Simran Singh, a second year law student at Osgoode Hall Law School. Simran is a little under the weather, but shares his insights on the 2L workload. Adam shows some animosity towards Denzel Washington. The group discusses how the skills and efficiency from 1L are brought into 2L. Simran shares the "gold medalist" strategy for success, and how he deviated from it.
Is an interest in reading crucial to law school? Adam describes his naïve undergrad reading habits and challenges students to get mad about cases they learn about. Professor Haigh swears, finally. Simran rants about the connection between emotion and reasoning before explaining how not to write a personal statement. This episode has all the advice you don't want to miss out on!

Friday Jan 03, 2020
Friday Jan 03, 2020
Richard and Adam are joined by Howie Kislowicz, Associate Professor at the University of Calgary to talk about law school culture and the view from the lectern. Adam does his readings... Kind of. Howie asks, "What's your law and order dream team?". Howie contrasts his earlier experiences teaching at the University of New Brunswick. The group discusses sense of community, class sizes, participation, diversity in admissions and more!
Howie and Richard discuss the challenge of choosing what your students call you. First name? Or Professor X? Howie shares the Kislowicz Unintentional Singing Promise (KUSP), where he made a promise to his students that he will sing a response to any question sung to him in class. Richard and Adam dive into Howie's law-themed love songs and discover the origin story of a great artist in a law school boy band.
